Down the Vid Store

It occurs to me that what's good, bad or ugly in the cinema has to meet far less demanding criteria when viewed from the befuddled domain of the plumped up sofa. I have fond memories of viewing one of the 'comet rushing towards Earth' blockbusters one Xmas Eve, and only last year of finding a kingdom of pleasure in The Mummy - a turkey shoot of a movie when I saw it at the 'flics. The other thing that occurs is that some good films just don't cut it on vid. More left field cinema seems to suffer on the small screen, the ability to enter into the spirit of the movie interrupted by the kettle, the pizza guy and a blimp. Consequentally movies that I haven't really raved about after seeing them at the cinema may come across as worthwhile from a vid point of view; something I've tried to accomodate in my listings.

trompe l'oiel, Clapham

A - definetely take this film home, I'm babbling in a loud and demonstrative fashion across three aisles of the vid store.

Cypher [Vincenzo Natali, 15]
Confidence [James Foley, 15]
In America [Jim Sheridan, 103', 15]
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World [Peter Weir, xyz, 12A]
Weather Underground, The [Sam Green and Bill Siegel, 93']

B - take this film home, it has merit but I'm not getting too excited about it, no one in the vid store is thinking 'wanker!'

Thirteen [Catherine Hardwicke, 100', 18, 2003
The Last Samurai [Edward Zwick, 15]
Cold Mountain [Anthony Minghella, 15]
Amandla! A Revolution in Four Part Harmony [Lee Hirsch, cert]
Kill Bill [Quentin Tarantino, 18]
Intolerable Cruelty [Joel Coen, 12]
Matrix Revolutions, The [Larry and Andy Wachowski, xyz', 15]
Mystic River [Clint Eastwood, xyz', 15]
Spun [Jonas Akerlund, 100, 18] - but you will need to be intoxicated
Hulk, The [Ang Lee, 12A]

C - drink and a joint or two will improve this movie, the offie's on the way home, do we need any papers?

Blind Shaft [Li Yang, 92', 15]
Crimson Gold [Jafar Panahi, 97', 12A]
Russian Ark [Alexander Sokurov, cert]
In The Cut [Jane Campion, 119', 18]
My Life Without Me [106', 15]

D - only to be viewed at three in the morning, mid-Atlantic, and then only when channel hopping between this and another similar film, or two. Every other word is a cuss and I'm getting visibly angry! In fact I'm casting about for other films to moan about, fuck I hate so much of modern life. . . On reflection a film has to be pretty dire to fit into Category D, there's not too much that can't be watched with the correct 'mood setting'. Consider these films as truly execrable, to be avoided. No, don't do it, you can always go over to the kids section and get 'Lilo and Stich' out.

Love Actually
