In the meantime I saw this yesterday at the Brixton Ritzy, where the aircon was broken. No competition with a viewing of Titanic in a packed Sri Lankan Sunday matinee. No aircon, just a couple of lacklustre fans, more noise than efficacy, and the desperate craving for the boat to hit the bloody iceberg. More ice sir?

Hulk, The
[Ang Lee, 12A]

Ang Lee's (The Ice Storm, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon) intelligent attempt to explore the psychological component of The Hulk's 'superpower'. Some breath-taking edits and a nice use of split screen in homage to the Hulk's comic book origins fail to bring this 'interesting' project to life. The film is overlong and oxymoronic: it strives for depth and scope and yet ends up feeling both superficial and claustrophobic. I didn't even come away thinking the producer had fukked it, rather I suspect Lee's ambitions were just too far-reaching.

I've waited for years for the great, intelligent blockbuster. This wasn't it, but a nice try and worth seeing if its a wet Wednesday in St Austell. However, in the end I felt sorry for the parents with kids who had to suffer the torrent of near expressionist film-making that marked the first hour and raised my hopes of a scintillating and extra-ordinary Hollywood picture. Alas the pathological need for formulaic conclusion grips the movie as its fragmented and innovative beginning gives way to an overlyfamilair plot trajectory. Definetely worth seeing but don't let your expectations become carried along by Act One's innovative style.
